Parenting Seminar

For the past eight weeks, the church has been hosting a parenting seminar. Created and offered by the National Center for Biblical Parenting, the video series is entitled Parenting is Heart Work.
I was first introduced to the NCBP at a one-day seminar that Kindra, Willow, and I attended in Anch. It was fantastic, so we pursued offering it as a service and outreach to our community.

The material is excellent...like Ted Tripp's Shepherding a Child's Heart, only much more readable (I have tried at least three times to get through that book, and for some reason I always got bogged down in it), and similar to Ezzo's Growing Kids God's Way, only much more manageable (only 8 weeks of a 30 min. dvd w/ a book). Highly practical, non-technical, easy to apply immediately. Wonderful. The underlying them is that we have to reach our kids hearts, not just change their behavior, if any change is going to be lasting and valuable. We can't keep upping the ante on behavior modification, promising more and bigger and better if the kids will only do what we want them to do (well, it can and has been done, but the results aren't pretty)! All that does is breed selfishness.

The best part of the parent's seminar is that the kids have a complimentary class going on at the same time! While parents were learning, for example, how to create an effective instruction routine, the kids that night learned to "come when I'm called, give a response, and report back when I'm done w/
the job." Now that's a lesson that's fun to teach!

Overall, it was a huge success. Six families participated, three of which don't have a
church...so it was rewarding to fill a void in their lives, not to mention that that the dvd lessons very clearly outlined how to have a saving relationship w/ Jesus, all of the lessons were based out of Scripture, and the parallel continuously drawn of God as a Father who parents us from the heart.

One of the very cool things is that these moms (only two dads-Mark was leading the class and one other dad from our church) were seeing positive results in their family lives from applying biblical principles. It was definitely a God-thing, and it was so great to be reaching members of our community where they felt the need.

Top two pics: From the last class, creating a trail of footprints to the treasures (such as having a good attitude, accepting no as an answer, settling their hearts, etc, that they learned each week). Third pic, Andrew and Clay tied up (ha-some parenting class, right?) pretending to be Paul and Silas (or was it Barnabas? What kind of pastor's wife am I, anyway...) tied up in prison but still being content and singing instead of complaining! Last pic, the crew of kids, sans two kids whose mom was sick the last night. Not an easy crew, but we had fun and they wrote God's Word on their hearts and found some great treasures for family living!

Spot of spring

This has been our bright spot for the past month or so. We went to a birthday party at the end of March, and the craft activity was to decorate a spring tree. They are cut willow branches, stuck into the foam stuff, and there were tons of little Easter ornaments and fuzzy chickies and stickers, etc, with which to decorate.

The differences are what I find hysterical.
Andrew's is on the right. Lots of stickers, a pink chickie and a yellow chickie, several ornaments, and three different colors of grass.
Jacob's: 1 yellow chickie, 1 sticker, conceded to the grass at mom's urging. Done.

One tough cookie...

This is how they were playing in Anna's room the other day...
Anna's gonna have to be one tough cookie to keep up!

Please pray!

I don't know who would still be up at this point (10 p.m. our time), but I would like to ask you to pray with us...
There is a 4 y.o. little boy in our neighborhood that has been missing for almost 4 hours. His name is Ryan, and the Search and Rescue team was just getting geared up when we got home from church.
It will be dark in less than an hour...please pray that he is found quickly! Thanks!

UPDATE: It's 10:37, and he's been found! PRAISE GOD!!! I don't have any other details, since Mark's phone connection (he went back down to join the search party) wasn't good, but at least he's been found! (And it just got dark about 10 minutes ago...)

Spring family fun

On Sunday, we went snowshoeing...Jacob actually agreed to put them on instead of walk, so that he could go off the trails like Andrew does. He did great! Anna was happy as always in the pulk. Batteries on the camera died before I could catch Andrew...but he's usually moving too much, anyway!

But where else can you go snowshoeing on Sunday...

...and be out riding bikes the next day? :)
We took our "maiden voyage" of all three kids biking, and it worked really well! I rode w/ Jacob trailing behind on the, well, I don't really know what it's called. Jacob calls it a trailer, and since he's the one riding it, I guess we'll call it a trailer! Anna was in the bike buggy, which Mark pulled, and Andrew rode his own bike between us. Quite the train, but it was a fun workout!

I can see clearly now

...the snow is gone. Even though it's not technically gone, by a long shot, at least we're not getting any more of it that sticks around for long.
We're loving getting out everyday after lunch for a walk/bike ride/stroller ride!

Notice Jacob on foot chasing Andrew on a bike...somehow great entertainment for them both.

You know it's spring when...

CLARIFICATION: My dryer lost its original knob a few years back, and had a replacement that obviously didn't fit, but worked. It would get bumped off occasionally b/c it didn't fit properly. When we moved to our new house back in December, there was already quite a bit of snow. After the dust settled and we were able to move around the boxes, I noticed the knob to the dryer had disappeared. Not to be overly dramatic, I really had no hopes of ever seeing it again. So, I've been using the pliers to turn the knob.

When we came back from our walk the other day, I saw a something shiny and silver poking out of the snow, and lo and behold-my dryer knob!

BEFORE (sorry for the blur...hard to hold the pliers and take the photo)!

AFTER
____________________________________________________________________

You know it's spring when you find, unearthed (or is "unsnowed"?) in the driveway, the dryer knob that you lost in the process of moving back in December.

Ah, spring--the wonderful time of year when you no longer have to keep on top of the dryer a pair of needlenose pliers with which to start the machine.
Now if only we could get rid of the 4 feet of snow still covering our yard...

Baffled

I love my morning cup of coffee, and one of the difficult things for me about pregnancy and nursing is cutting out the coffee intake. At some point during my pregnancy w/ Anna, even Andrew noticed and then questioned why I wasn't having my coffee anymore. So I launched into an explanation about coffee not being good for babies. He remembered that tidbit, as there were times that I would be drinking decaf (I'm not prejudiced against decaf, it's just not worth the daily bother), and he would say, "But mom, that coffee isn't good for baby Anna!"

Well, as we approach Anna's first birthday, and subsequent weaning, my coffeemaker is no longer in exile. Apparently, all of the discussions about avoiding caffeine for babies and why I was or wasn't drinking coffee and which kind, etc, have all but evaporated from Andrew's memory. I set about enjoying a nice cup of coffee last Monday morning and exulted to Andrew "See Andrew, I'm having coffee again now that Anna doesn't have milk as much anymore!"

Puzzled glance. "Mom, why are you telling me this?"

Carhartt Girl

She's hard-workin'...

Just not worth it...

"Earth Balance Non-Dairy Buttery Sticks" and almond milk just don't cut it if you're trying to make dairy-free mashed potatoes. Spare yourself the trouble.

"Annual" Ski!

Two Saturdays ago, my friend Heather and I made our "annual" 5-mile ski trek! We first made this ski trip either the spring of '05 or '06 (can't remember which), and had such a great time then that we intended to do it every year. Since this was only our second time to do this, we obviously didn't make it annually, (pregnancies and/or nursing babies on both of our parts will do that to plans). Since we're both all over that, we decided to get back to our tradition!

The trail we ski starts at T. Lake, and ends in C.L. We shuttle her van to the end of the trail, and then drive my van back to the start of the trail. It's not an easy ski...we do live in the mountains, after all. But the snow and weather conditions were just perfect, so we actually enjoyed it more this time than last. (I think it's partly due to the fact that conditions last time were somewhat icy. And it was our first time down the trail. You know, that unnerving feeling you get flying on your own two feet down hills and around unknown curves? Partly due to that).

The other boon to this trip is the end of the line. At the end of line is a diner that has the best burgers and fries around. Okay...that might be an exaggeration. Keep in mind that the only time I have their burgers is after a five-mile ski. (Well, after our ski and it's also the only place near MP that's still open for the season when my birthday rolls around. So unless Mark plans ahead for my birthday, that's the only option). But rather than make progress burning calories on a long, hard ski, Heather and I instead motivate ourselves with the thought of a bacon-mushroom-swiss burger with fries. It's only once a year, after all. And it's the best meal of the year. Can you blame us?

All in all, it was a glorious day. A great friend, a great ski, some great weather, great scenery, a great meal, and no kiddos....priceless!

Rebecca's Bowling Party

We had a blast bowling at Rebecca's party! It was both of the boys' first time bowling, and they really enjoyed it. In fact, on the way home, Andrew asked "Can we go bowling more often?" :) I don't know that Andrew ever knocked over a single pin, but it didn't seem to matter to him.
Thanks for a great time, mom and dad! Thanks for having a birthday, Rebecca!

Jacob's Hilarity

This series is of Jacob, after he pushed Andrew and I down the hill (as seen in the last picture of the following post). His laughter is downright infectious!

Sledding!

Rather than traipse out skiing or snowshoeing last night after dinner, we decided just to head to the backyard! Our hill is the result of driveway plowing...last time we got dumped on, we paid to have a loader come and clear it back further (so that we can more easily get into the shed and the storage room/soon-to-be entryway). So, we have a decent hill!

I just love these sets of before/after "take-off." I'll be back later to add a series of Jacob's hilarity after the last picture was taken!

Happy (belated) Brithday, Ethan!

Ethan's turned two on the 6th! And while we didn't forget, we didn't acknowledge it, either-so sorry, Ethan! (Part of it is knowing that kids that age won't know one way or the other...I know, I'm horrible. At least Sue and I have an understanding regarding correspondence and such...we're both in the same boat)!
At any rate, here's Ethan as a 4 month old, the only time we've seen him to have pictures of him. Happy being 2, Ethan!
